Our Purpose
CHNDC implements specific projects with the purpose of creating vibrant, attractive neighborhood on Capitol Hill with various activities, uses, and a mix of residents from all walks of life. CHNDC works to reinforce the role of the three churches in the southern part of Downtown Atlanta to improve our churches’ immediate environs and facilitate their ministries. CHNDC works with our neighbors, government neighbors, business organizations, and other stakeholders to assert that the churches’ collective vision should not be lost in their deliberations. CHNDC works to create a vision that is inclusive, harmonious, and vibrant—a true City on a Hill.
Because all three churches have had a long history of service to and advocacy for the homeless population, “the least of these,” CHNDC, in its capacity as a 501(c)3 development corporation and with expertise in real estate development, works to find opportunities for the development of supportive and affordable housing. It is doing this through research, alliances with provider organizations, and sourcing capital to address this need and to create more supportive housing in the City.
Organizational Structure
The charter for the new corporation, Capitol Hill Neighborhood Development Corporation, was issued on March 25, 1994. It was set up as a membership corporation in which the three churches are members, and the members elect the board of directors.
CHNDC has been certified as a tax-exempt non-profit corporation under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Although its members are the three churches, it is a separate non-sectarian legal entity. Its proven track record is evidenced by its work in developing Hope House across from the Trinity-Washington Building and the new 836-space, $15 million Government Center Parking Deck across from the Atlanta City Hall.
Member Churches
The churches that are members of CHNDC are Central Presbyterian Church, The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and Trinity United Methodist Church. These churches have a rich history with a longstanding emphasis on social ministries. They have maintained their primary places of worship on Capitol Hill for more than 150 years.
Homeless Outreach
The CHNDC is focused on creating a vibrant neighborhood around the capitol and is dedicated to providing support and developing solutions for Atlanta’s homeless.
